Reddit's 2016 NBA Redraft

(This is a continuation of a series. Reddit's 2017 Redraft can be viewed here and Reddit's 2018 Pre-March Draft can be viewed here.)

Some time has now passed since the 2016 NBA selection night and, even though all their careers are still ahead of them, these prospects are much less of a mystery to us now. Earlier this week, I posted polls around Reddit asking for enthusiasts to fill out their own 2016 Redraft board at this point in time. I sought the input of many subreddits & received a multitude of responses. Here are the average redraft positions of the top 2016 NBA prospects (Note: undrafted players, such as VanFleet, were omitted):

Average Draft Positions

-Tier 1-

1. Ben Simmons (ADP: 1.63)
Team/Pos/Age: PHI/PG/21
Stats: 15.8p/8.1r/8.2a/1.7s/0.9b/81g
Adv. Stats: 20per/.557ts%/22.3usg%/9.2ws/4.6bpm

-The run-away top choice is Ben Simmons for obvious reasons. Simmons has played like an all-star since his first game and has genuine hall-of-fame upside. There are other interesting players in this draft but none as clearly generational as this aussie.

-Tier 2-

2. Jaylen Brown (ADP: 3.02)
Team/Pos/Age: BOS/SF/21
Stats: 14.5p/5r/1.6a/1s/0.4b/70g
Adv. Stats: 13.7per/.562ts%/21.4usg%/4.5ws/-0.1bpm

-Jaylen Brown edges out other budding young prospects due to his quality production in a central role for a great team. While many of Brown's contemporaries are establishing themselves on average-to-poor teams, Jaylen will be handling many responsibilities in the playoffs for years to come.

3. Brandon Ingram (ADP: 3.08)
Team/Pos/Age: LAL/SF/20
Stats: 16.1p/5.3r/3.9a/0.8s/0.7b/59g
Adv. Stats: 13.8per/.536ts%/22.2usg%/2.8ws/-1.3bpm

-With an almost identical ADP to Brown, Brandon Ingram comes in just behind his draft day position. His versatile game has take a step forward this year & there is still plenty of room for Ingram to grow with his young teammates and coach. Brandon's biggest knocks are his low bpm & games played this season.

4. Jamal Murray (ADP: 4.27)
Team/Pos/Age: DEN/PG/21
Stats: 16.7p/3.7r/3.4a/1s/0.3b/81g
Adv. Stats: 16.1per/.576ts%/22.8usg%/5.5ws/-0.2bpm

-My personal choice for #2 in this draft, Jamal Murray has come on this season in a way that Denver was really hoping for. While he may not garner the notoriety of his bigger-market opponents, Murray has produced very comparable production for a boarder line playoff team. I expect to see Jamal doing interesting things in the playoffs very soon.

-Tier 3-

5. Buddy Hield (ADP: 6.84)
Team/Pos/Age: SAC/SG/24
Stats: 13.5p/3.8r/1.9a/1.1s/0.3b/80g
Adv. Stats: 16.1per/.557ts%/24.3usg%/2.8ws/-0.9bpm

-This is where the choices get very divided, as Buddy Hield comes in fifth despite having an ADP of almost seventh. Hield has decent numbers by most measures and definitely deserved more minutes than he got this year but I'm personally not sold on him over some other names here. However, at this point in a draft like this, one could do worse than a quality role player.

6. Kris Dunn (ADP: 7.37)
Team/Pos/Age: CHI/PG/24
Stats: 13.4p/4.3r/6a/2s/0.5b/52g
Adv. Stats: 14.5per/.488ts%/24.7usg%/0.8ws/-0.1bpm

-Much like Hield, Kris Dunn has put together passable numbers (though that may be a bit forgiving) at a relatively advanced age. His central role gives Dunn a lot of opportunity to grow but many are justifiably lukewarm on what he has produced thus far. Yet again, at this point I cannot say there are many obvious alternatives.

7. Domantas Sabonis (ADP: 7.97)
Team/Pos/Age: IND/C/21
Stats: 11.6p/7.7r/2a/0.5s/0.4b/74g
Adv. Stats: 17.5per/.567ts%/22.1usg%/4.7ws/-0.2bpm

-Someone I am partial to, Domantas Sabonis took major steps forward this season and Reddit has recognized. Though there may be questions of the transferability of his game, there is no question that Sabonis will be playing an important role in this NBA postseason. He may not be in a big market but the advanced stats are on Domantas' side.

8. Taurean Prince (ADP: 8.01)
Team/Pos/Age: ATL/SF/24
Stats: 14.1p/4.7r/2.6a/1s/0.5b/82g
Adv. Stats: 12.8per/.549ts%/22.1usg%/2ws/-0.7bpm

-Taurean Prince had months of real quality production this year & seems to be on track to be a decent starter in today's NBA. Hopefully he can add some more consistency to his versatile game in years to come but it is clear that Prince can help in many ways.
9. Malcolm Brogdon (ADP: 8.09)
Team/Pos/Age: MIL/PG/25
Stats: 13p/3.3r/3.2a/0.9s/0.3b/48g
Adv. Stats: 14.3per/.578ts%/19.1usg%/2.7ws/-1.3bpm

-It is interesting to see the reigning ROY come in ninth in his own redraft, but it has been a checked sophomore year for Malcolm Brogdon. His advanced stats have taken a step sideways and Brogdon has missed half the season due to injuries. It is clear that The President can be a quality rotation player for almost any team but some will need to see more growth from him going forward.

10. Dejounte Murray (ADP: 9.32)
Team/Pos/Age: SAS/PG/21
Stats: 8.1p/5.7r/2.9a/1.2s/0.4b/81g
Adv. Stats: 15.1per/.485ts%/20.7usg%/3.2ws/1.2bpm

-Jumping up several spots from his draft day position, Dejounte Murray is just another Spurs success story. His unorthodox game shows up in the mixed data love but Murray's surprise replacement as San Antonio's starting point guard reflects his combination of decent production & high growth upside. Dejounte is definitely a player that I am personally excited about.

11. Jakob Poeltl (ADP: 9.58)
Team/Pos/Age: TOR/C/22
Stats: 6.9p/4.8r/0.7a/0.5s/1.2b/82g
Adv. Stats: 17.5per/.662ts%/14.8usg%/5.6ws/3.3bpm

-The final player from this draft with sizable evidence of rotation production is Reddit's eleventh consensus choice. Though it has been in a minor role thus far, Poeltl has provided quality production for a team with finals aspirations. It will be interesting to see if Poeltl can develop into a more central role as his career advances but there is a lot of evidence that he could.

-Tier 4-

12. Caris LeVert (ADP: 11.06)
Team/Pos/Age: BKN/SF/23
Stats: 12.1p/3.7r/4.2a/1.2s/0.3b/71g
Adv. Stats: 14.3per/.525ts%/22.5usg%/2.3ws/-0.5bpm

-Someone I think Reddit might be sleeping on is a guy emerging on one of the worst teams in the league. While Caris LeVert still has a lot to prove, I do believe he deserves as much consideration as some of the previously listed prospects. The advanced stats are fair and there much opportunity for LeVert to grow with his organization.

13. Marquese Chriss (ADP: 12.54)
Team/Pos/Age: PHX/PF/20
Stats: 7.7p/5.5r/1.2a/0.7s/1b/72g
Adv. Stats: 11.1per/.509ts%/18.1usg%/0.7ws/-2bpm

-The high risk/high reward prospect of 2016 has slid in Reddit's redraft because Marquese Chriss has done very little so far in his career. While Chriss is young, he has also been given a lot of opportunity with very mild results. There is still hope that Marquese can put it all together but the public is growing doubtful.

14. Dragan Bender (ADP: 12.97)
Team/Pos/Age: PHX/PF/20
Stats: 6.5p/4.4r/1.6a/0.3s/0.6b/82g
Adv. Stats: 7.1per/.524ts%/12.7usg%/0.1ws/-2.7bpm

-The other Phoenix lottery pick of 2016 also drops for similar reasons. The Suns rolled the dice on two high-upside prospects and neither have bared much fruit yet. Dragan Bender is the youngest prospect here & has shown flashes of efficient contributions but those flashes have been few & far between. There is still time for Bender but he will have to start proving himself soon.

15. Pascal Siakam (ADP: 12.98)
Team/Pos/Age: TOR/PF/24
Stats: 7.3p/4.5r/2a/0.8s/0.5b/81g
Adv. Stats: 14.5per/.549ts%/15.7usg%/4.7ws/2.1bpm

-Another member of Toronto's efficient second unit, Pascal Siakam has proven that he can provide to winning basketball in a limited role. While Siakam hasn't had central minutes like some listed ahead of him, it is clear that Pascal's game has been better for winning games. Many will have reservations about Siakam ever becoming more than a role player but that is actually a strong outcome for a prospect this last in a draft like this.
